Orlando A Somers Camp #1. Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Meeting Minutes—October 20, 2007—Richard’s Restaurant. Commander Matt Elkin presided and opened the meeting at 1:00 p.m. Chaplain Jon Ayers led. the group in the opening prayer, and members joined to recite the American’s Creed and the. Pledge of Allegiance. Commander Elkin distributed copies of minutes from the September. meeting, which were then approved. Treasurer Randy McNally gave our account balance. Members present were: Matt Elkin, Allen Moore, Larry Myer, Tom Crawford, Jon Ayers, Randy McNally, Don. Overmyer, Ned Baker, David Bastin, and Gayle Eikenberry. Beth Myer and Connie Overmyer attended as our. guests.. Old Business:. Commander Elkin asked about our interest in participating in the Veterans Day ceremony. A. brief discussion followed in which it was noted that if we participate we need to make our. presence known.. Commander Elkin requested news about information gathered about the last Civil War survivor. from Cass and Carroll counties. Tom Crawford reported that the search for information was still. in its preliminary stages and he would have more to report later.. New Business. Jon Ayers thanked everyone who participated in the program at Lindley Cemetery.. Commander Elkin reported that at the G.A.R. Allied Orders meeting in Crawfordsville Alan Teller. was elected as the new commander.. Samples of literature for distribution on the Civil War Train were shown. . Commander Elkin asked for our suggestions about informing members of upcoming dues. It. was decided that a dues notice would be mailed. . Commander Elkin then requested ideas for potential projects and for fundraising. We will need. additional funds to purchase a plaque to honor a last Civil War veteran of Cass or Carroll. county.. Problems concerning cleaning the cannon were discussed. Items have been placed on top of it. and around it which makes cleaning difficult. The new target date for completion of the building. to house it is next spring. The building will not have climate control, and this needs to be taken. into consideration in planning items for display.. Commander Elkin distributed general orders concerning the National Encampment in November. which will address classes of membership.. Program. The program was given by Gerald Jones, who spoke about Berdan's Sharpshooters. He gave. many interesting details about sharpshooters in general and their role in the war..
