Commander Matt Elkins opened
the meeting at 12:50 p.m. Chaplain Pro Tem Jacob Elkins led the group in the
opening prayer. We recited the American’s Creed and the Pledge of Allegiance
led by Commander Elkins. Secretary Eikenberry reported that minutes had been
mailed or emailed to members and asked for any corrections or additions.
Treasurer McNally reported a balance of $3,455.02, of which $835.00 belongs to
the Cannon Fund. Eleven members have not paid their dues. A reminder was
mailed. The status of members not paid will be discussed at the next meeting.
Members present were Allen Moore, Alan Teller, Matt Elkin, Jacob Elkin, Tom Crawford, Randy McNally, Larry Myer, and Gayle Eikenberry. Guests in attendance were Lee Ann Teller, Kylie Elkin, and Beth Myer.
Old Business:
Tom Crawford reported that he
received information from the National Archives about Gordon Williams, the last
Civil War soldier from Howard County. Williams went as a substitute and was
declared unfit for field service when he reported for duty and was sent to the
hospital as an attendant where he served for eight months before being
discharged. Brother Crawford suggested that the wording on the plaque be more
general in nature and gave us three choices to consider. He made a motion to
accept the first choice. (See attached document) Alan Teller seconded the
motion, and it passed unanimously.
After a brief discussion about
Allen Moore's motion tabled at the last meeting, Alan withdrew his motion.
The stones for the cemetery
project should all arrive by the end of March.
Alan Teller spoke about how
excellent the program was that he attended about the childhood home of Abe
Lincoln.
Commander Elkin gave several
dates for upcoming events:
April 14 – Lincoln Death Day Observance
May 27 – Memorial Day Service at Crown Point Cemetery
June 2 – Summer Encampment, IUK
August 9-12 – National Encampment
October 6 – Crawfordsville Allied Orders meeting
Alan Teller polled the group
to find out how many belonged to the Yahoo SUVCW group. Four members responded
that they did. It's a good way to find out about events and issues concerning
our order.
Program
The program was given by
Commander Matt Elkin. He spoke about the Andersonville Prison and gave us
information about its history and present status. It was interesting to not
that soldiers are still being buried there. The program was informative and
interesting.
Commander Elkin closed the
meeting at 2:05 p.m.
The closing prayer was
offered by Chaplain Pro Tem Jacob Elkins.
The next meeting will be
March 17.
Gayle Eikenberry, Secretary
